Book-case fail
When I moved into this flat I realised I was missing around half of the screws for my second- or third-hand Billy book-case, but recklessly I put it up and started using it anyway.

NB: DO NOT DO THIS.

Last night, as I was shelving a book, every shelf in the book-case collapsed, although thankfully the bottom ones were too tightly packed with books to get very far. The middle shelf had many of my sculptures on it, so quite a few of these were broken, some of them irreparably. C'est la vie.

Anyway, the point of this post is not so much to moan as to ask if anyone happens to have any Ikea Billy screws kicking around, that they could possibly spare? I think this is fixable with three or four more screws, but in the meantime I'm scared that the stuff on the remaining shelves, or possibly the stuff piled on top of the book-case, could also collapse! Crucially, the middle shelf is supposed to hold the whole thing together, and has abruptly abdicated this responsibility, so the outer panels are now able to bulge outward slightly, so that all the other shelves don't fit right any more.

Failing local help, I'll have to head to Ikea on Monday - which I should have done months ago I guess, it just always seemed so silly travelling 45 minutes each way to pick up half a dozen screws! Especially when I know Ikea will tempt me with pretty furniture and household goods that I can't afford and don't actually need.

Cheers folks - sorry to moan again.

Got a picture of what these screws look like? I have various bits and pieces in my toolbox, so maybe.

(the bit that it screws into is shown for context, but I have much less need of these)

Will check, I think we have a bag of various IKEA fittings kicking around the cupboard.

Alas, while we have a wide selection of screws (ooer), none of them appear to be the sort you need. Sorry!

I just recently bought some Billy bookcases, and they didn't have screws that looked remotely like that. I guess they changed the design since yours was built? Sorry to say, you might have trouble getting replacement screws, if they don't make them like that now.

Could you not just pop to your local B&Q/homebase etc and find some similar screws?

IKEA tend to be pretty careful about using proprietary fastenings, unfortunately.

I don't have any spares, despite half a dozen Billys kicking around.

What classytart said. It's possible they might have the exact right thing, but the screws are pretty specialised - if they're not pretty much exactly the right length and non-tapered but with truncated-conical heads of roughly the right dimensions, they won't be much use. :(

Arrrrgh, the sculptures! I hope you didn't lose too many creatures.

Thanks, I don't think I lost many, no - not nearly as bad as I initially feared - a few three-legged critters, though, which is quite unfortunate.

Sorry to hear that. A bookcase collapsing is (almost strangely) really upsetting. It always happens at the worst time and destroys your equilibrium. I hope you didn't lose too much in the carnage. :-(

Oh, I hope everything went ok at the GP yesterday.

Yeah, it was a really upsetting - and alarming - thing. Really not what I needed when I was already feeling quite tired and short of breath. I had mulled wine and strudel as soon as I finished clearing up the debris though, so it was alright in the end. :)

GP visit was alright, yeah. No actual treatment, but at least on the road to some tests.

Call your loca IKEA. They should be able to give you some new ones for free.
